The Dishtowel Project has been an interesting odyssey for me and really the beginning of a journey. It is the first of a series of more personal quilts about my family. Right away I knew this quilt would be about my mother, Yolanda Ciricillo, and my aunt Bettina Oddo. Immediate associations with the kitchen, baking and apple pie helped get the images flowing. All along I have marveled at the way the work and the reminiscences feed upon each other. Thus, there it is...a soft and cheery story with comforting thoughts of childhood and growing up.

Meanwhile, I was noticing in newspapers and magazines how often the apple pie is cited as an American icon...especially statements like "as American as apple pie". My journal, which started as a personal commentary on my quiltmaking process, became a collection of media references to national attributes and icons. Violence and peacemaking, discrimination and justice, courage, honor, grace under pressure...

"Mom 'N Apple Pie" has a front and a back. There is an object for viewers to see, and a flow of thoughts and feelings that accompanied its creation. Working on this quilt has helped me meditate on my desire to make my ideas and emotions more explicit in my quilts. My dishtowel quilt represents a kind of poem to my mother, to thank her for helping me become a person mindful of life's contradictions.
