"Don't Upset the Apple Cart!"
43.5"h x 43.5"w.
Machine pieced and appliqued, quilted and embellished by hand, computer assisted photo transfers, antique buttons, hologram sequins, glass beads and metallic threads, hand dyed and commercial fabrics, cottons and blends.
This is my first quilt! It took longer than I imagined it would (doesn't everything?) but every minute was enjoyable. I had to make myself stop when it was getting close to a ton, weight wise! Is there ever too much embellishment? Currently, my work takes the form of embellished commercial food product packaging. In addition to this, I have an ongoing series of full size shopping carts intended as symbolic self portraits. One cart is beaded, one upholstered, one pink neon, etc. The sequined shopping cart is meant to be a link between the quilt and this other work.
The cart's handle says "Mom's Kitchen". With our busier than ever lives, Mom isn't in the kitchen as much as she once was. The "homemade" apple pie, nostalgic symbol of a simpler time, is now often made at the grocery and brought home and reheated! The apples are flying from the cart because Mom is in a hurry, as the frantic lines around the cart illustrate. The old, black buttons in the background, gleaned from my grandmother's button box remind me that it was Grandma who taught me to bake an apple pie, but it was also Grandma and Mom who encouraged me to have the life I want, doing what I want. I owe them both.
