"In Mom's Kitchen, Big Bear Gets the Pie."
33"h x 59.5"w.
Machine quilted and appliqued; painted; pearlescent paints.
Completed: February, 1999.
All the works I've made since the 60's are visual narratives: from a series on dioxins and PCB's (70's and early 80's) to shaped pieces with interactions between humans and other animals, to the series I'm now involved with, in which bears take over human habitats like the studio, look out stations in the West, cabins, and bears visit their past in the Halls of Memory series. It has been my experience that most of the higher mammals lead lives at least as interesting as our own, and are as individual as we humans feel we are.
Polar bears, called the gentlest of the bears, are particularly playful and curious. The Mom's Kitchen piece is derived from the photos of bears peering in the windows of the experimental laboratories at Churchill on Hudson's Bay in Canada. They are, it seems, always intrigued by human activities. Here, in this quilt, they watch the biggest bear as he inhales the fresh pie aroma.
I had a lot of fun making this piece--the towel was so corny it was beautiful, and making the piece reminded me of the pleasures of walking up the road to the ranch after school, and opening the house door to a roaring cookstove and hot apple pie out of the oven.
