Certain elements have remained consistent since I began creating art, at age 3. I have always collaged, I have always worked with fabrics, and I have always been influenced by the art and artifacts of the past. In the piece for this exhibition, "Mom's Itching to get in Mom's Kitchen, Home of the Original Sin Apple Pie," I have taken the image of Adam and Eve from a work by Lucas Cranach and have transferred it to fabric, then painted and further manipulated it for my piece. I love the stylized Netherlandish figures, so pale and thin with high foreheads and heavy eyelids.
Once Adam and Eve were in place on the "triptych" doors, I needed to have a snake, as well. Since the big apple pie was sharing the door space with A & E, it made sense to put the snake inside, as a surpise, like a dancer jumping out of a cake. Instead, here we have a snake jumping out of an apple pie, more or less. Along the way, I decided that I wanted the base of the whole piece to happen on top of an old dressy top that I love, but no longer wear. This was part of a two piece 1950's number, and was originally iridescent with black velvet stripes. By embellishing it with many many little blue stitches, I truly tranformed the fabric, and integrated it into the apple pie piece. Later on, I added a stuffed hennaed decorated arm, a fish ( for Fisher), and lots of buttons, beads, and trim. The words "Mom's Kitchen," when split in half and folded to become doors, lost the "K" in Kitchen and became "Mom's Itchen" - hence the title!
