Making Piecon has been a great learning experience. It took forever for me to begin, and while I was spending my days staring at the towel and wondering why I had ever agreed to participate in this project, I had to read daily reports from my dear friend and fellow participant Andi Stern about the progress on her amazing piece! And she was pregnant and has three other kids and a dog! Talk about feeling inadequate! Finally, like a miracle last December, I got the flash of inspiration. Mom's Kitchen (the towel) had become an icon for me (what with staring at it day in and day out, kind of moaning, or chanting about my dearth of ideas) so I would give it the treatment that an icon deserves. The initial construction stages happened fast... I chopped that sucker up and started playing jig saw puzzle with the pieces. Once the layout came together, it was just a matter of hours of hand applique to secure the three "monstrances", then lots of hours of embroidery (those French knots were a blast!) and beading til it felt right.
Loved the whole experience (in retrospect!) and am amazed at how much non-artistic work there is in creating and showing work, even in cyber space. Thanks to Lucky Susan, world's best curator, teacher and camp counsellor!
