Andrea Stern
"Mom's Psyche Deli."
76"h x 106"w.
Machine Pieced, fusing, applique, hand quilting, bead embroidery, buttons, spray paint, hand-dyed and hand-painted fabric, commercial fabric, Poly-Fil batting.
This piece was made by two different people. The first was the me of last Spring, who envisioned a large airbrush and beadwork tribute to the fun childhood in my grandmother's kitchen. The second was the me who had to find an alternative method of finishing the center, since airbrushing during pregnancy is not recommended. The colors are the colors of my late 60's-early 70's memories: vivid lime, aqua, and purple paisley. "Mom" floats in a Magritte-like sky, holding her pie. the cakes were inspired by the Baker's Coconut cake book my grandmother kept in her cookie cookbook. (There is another quilt eventually, on the many potato-chip cans full of cookies my grandmother would bake each year at Christmas.) The dates on the calendars are those of my family's birthdays.
By the way, the baby arrived on March 9, 11 days before the due date of the quilt.
