"Tea for Three Muses, or Another Cockeyed Quilt"
66"h x 72"w.
A quilt takes a little from a lot of places, mixes it up like confetti and rearranges the molecules into a new ...ah, creation... This one began with a simple challenge, that of a homely dishtowel straight from the shelf at OddLots.
The idea appealed to me. Considering the stacks of kitchen and other household fabrics I have collected, deliberately, over the years, the additon of a tea towel was right up my alley. I believe any fabric has potential for a quilt, just as any image might be used in a collage. But the real challenge became to make it into something personal.
The household aspects of this piece are part of its feminine statement. While any fabric can become part of a quilt, this particular fabric from tablecloths, teatowels and napkins intensifies its traditional feminine base. The hand-printed Goddess images were inspired by the traditional Guadalupe images from Mexico, but can take on all aspects of the goddess. Their number, three, recalls the virgin, mother, crone.
So, take the happy, homely, dishtowel from one of Ohio's premier shopping experiences, throw in a "found" kitchen tablecloth/curtain, rummage through collections of old tablecloths and fabric household "stuff", add in three printed "Marys", images of teapots and cups from everywhere, plus a good part of my button collection and Voila! Now she's a quilt! Well, maybe not quite that fast. Nearly four months went by, since I work so slowly, but add a bit o¤+Äng, stitchingquilting, plus (on the interior at least) cussing and focusing and, then, you have a quilt.
