"Artistic Circus: 6 of Paring Knives (swords) in the Kitchen Tarot."

©Susan Shie 2024.  60"h x 62.5"w.  inventory #534.  Peace Cozy #90. made quilt 6-6 to 7-7-24.

Materials: white kona-like cotton from Test Fabrics, Createx airbrush paint, Posca paint markers, Aurifil cotton machine thread, Artfabrik variegated hand dyed perle cotton embroidery thread, one Green Temple Buddha Boy bead. Pellon bamboo and organic cotton batting. Mostly Lunn Fabrics hand-made cotton batiks on backing and border.

Techniques: Whole cloth painting. Black line freehand drawing and color areas painted with Aztek double-action airbrush and airbrush paint. Smaller writing done with Posca paint markers, because my wrists were both broken in dog falls, over time, and I no longer have the strength to use my airpen for small writing with paint. Mostly machine sewn, with one row of hand stitching of perle cotton thread from Artfabrik.com (on the border's outside edge.)

I am a social justice activist painter and fiber artist, mixing current events, history, personal experiences and ideas into my art.   I airbrush whole cloth works which I then write on and sew. I also make many large, double-page, finished drawings in my hardbound sketchbooks, and those look a lot like my quilts.  My artwork and writing are all spontaneous first drafts on the artworks.  I don't like to look at my sketches, while I'm drawing with the airbrush and paint, to create the piece's images on the large cloth, because I want my images to remain very fresh and honest, and I want to enjoy creating them.  I let myself sneak looks at the sketches, just to remind myself what goes where, sort of.  I love the feeling of drawing and writing on that big, scary, blank piece of white cloth, using my airbrush and black paint, and "letting 'er rip!"

Many large detail images of this piece are here, below my artist's statement.

My statement about this art quilt:

“Artistic Circus: 6 of Paring Knives (swords) in the Kitchen Tarot.” 60.5”h x 62.5”w.  Peace Cozy #90.  Made 6-6 to 7-7-2024.  Whole cloth art quilt.  Drawn and painted with airbrush and written on with airbrush and Posca paint markers.  Mostly machine sewn, with hand sewing around the border.  One Green Temple Buddha Boy button.

Our artists’ group, WAGE, chose the theme “Artistic Circus” as our exhibition theme for this year.  I decided that my life has been … an artistic circus!  So I made 9 (not 6!) vignettes from times in my life, drew them in, and colored them.  Then I started writing on them, figuring out what to say, as I went.  So I expect that this little biography is pretty chaotic and not well organized.  But, being spontaneous, without the benefit of having an outline or first draft, or even a list of topics, it is deflintely all from the heart.

And at the end of making it, our beloved dog Libby died.  And I realized she wasn’t in any of the pictures or stories in this piece.  BUT I had some room left in the right side of the border, so I drew her in and wrote about her there.  And she’s in the label on the back.

And I’ve been trying to put a haiku on each new quilt, since I always put one on each drawing I make.  So this time, the haiku is on the back, at the bottom of my label.  And it says:

“How we miss Libby!

The best dog we ever had!

Please watch over us!”

I’ve always put a lot of my own personal life into my art pieces, but this is the first time I’ve actually created an autobiography, as a piece’s entire theme.  I hope you like it.

When a quilt I'm making is almost done, even after I'd done all the quilting, I have to choose where to put the Peace Cozy.  This one is #90 in my use of them.  It's the Peace Symbol on a little 1" or so piece of light green cloth. I don't allow myself to pre-plan where the Peace Cozy goes. That would be cheating!   I ended up sewing it onto my hair, in the #2 ring of my Artistic Circus, where I showed me making my very first protest painting.

You can see my album of photos of making this piece and its finished images, on my Facebook page, at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10161358816719158&type=3

You’ll see me airbrushing it as a black-line drawing, then also airbrush coloring it, and then writing on it, sewing it, etc.  Enjoy.

I hope you like this piece and can read the writing in the detail pix below!
