"Susan Lets Her Hair Down” 2006 67"h x 19.5"w.

Whole cloth painting on fabric. Beginning design and colors airbrushed on, Then airpen drawing and writing with fabric paint. Machine crazy grid quilted. One row of hand sewing inside edge of border. One Green Temple Buddha Boy bead. One Peace Cozy patch, from the 29 Peace Cozies series begun in Nov, 05.
My little fiber artists’ group in Lakewood, the West End Textile tArts, aka The tArts, decided to make a group piece to enter into the 2006 Quilts for Change exhibition, and we ended up making the rules just these, for our panels: Each of us would make a long panel, specific sized, of a full length self portrait. We each chose a background color, so they’d all be different, but those were the only restrictions.
I drew myself in a long dress, gave myself the fancy shoes I never have, and put my arms up in the air, after painting hands all down my sides. After I made my hair, I realized I’d shown it down, instead of in the ponytail I always have it in. So I got this idea for the title, since I’d let it down.
The many hands are for all the things I’m trying to do at once these days, with going back and forth between Wooster and Lakewood each week, to take care of Eva and to do my art and other things.
I put my Peace, Love, and Art symbols down the front of my body, and put a big pie, or tart, in the center of the heart. ( I use pies a lot in my work, and they symbolize gifts, surprises, and good things.) There are lots of my peace roses on this piece, and I wrote a lot of stuff about my own life and current events, like I usually do. My diary, as always, Is written first hand on the piece with my airpen. Of course I included my political commentaries in the diary.
I stuck the Peace Cozy patch on my nose, as my face seems to be from when I was a little girl, and little girls like stickers a lot! There was so much open space left unwritten on, just on my face. And this way, I’ll look in the mirror and see Peace each time. - Susan, March 18, 2006.
