This piece is all hand stitched over my drawing. All hand quilted, embroidered, and beaded.

When my mother was dying, after many years of having Alzheimer's Disease, I got to spend much of her last week at her side, mostly in the hospital, where she remained in a light coma. I drew her right on the quilt sandwich and quilt/embroidered the piece, back in 2001, finishing it after she died. In 2003 I did a lot more work to the embroidery, to make her face softer and more natural looking, and I stitched the whole background to the same level of intensity.

Reworking this piece gave me such flashbacks to that amazing week of intimacy with my mother. It was the first time I'd slept beside her since I was a toddler, when she'd lie down with me, to get me to go to sleep for my afternoon nap. I am grateful for this chance.
