The Mansfield Art Center Presents:
"THE DISHTOWEL QUILT PROJECT EXHIBITION"
June 6 - July 11, 1999.
Above is the poster Danny Butts designed, to be the main sign for our show.
The effect of these quilts hanging together is inspiring. I will try to give you a little sense of what the show feels like, with my photo diary of it. Hope you like it!
Daniel Butts, III, Director of The Mansfield Art Center, poses with the sign and the one dishtowel remaining in original shape, after he hung the exhibition! My notebook, with lots of info about the artists and their quilts, is on the pedestal.
From left: Quilts by Sue Alvarez, Patricia Ciricillo, Judith Vierow, Jane Burch Cochran, Susan Shie and James Acord, and Therese May.
Quilts from left by: Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart and Anita Corum.
Our Turtle Art Campers Sara Lechner and Jane Beckwith are the first to view the show. Quilts from left by: Suzanne Fisher, Cyd Engel, Bridget O'Connell, Linda Dolack, and Susan McMillen.
Quilts from left by: Marykay Yannotti, Andrea Stern, and Tafi Brown.
Quilts from left by: Anne O'Malley, Miriam Nathan Roberts, and JoAnne Webster. Behind the women's heads is the quilt by Kathleen Sharp.
Below are pix of the artists who came to the show's reception. There's a picture of Jimmy and me and our quilt, along with a couple of other show shots, on the July 4, 99 Turtle Trax Diary, too.
Andrea (Andi) Stern poses in front of her quilt, "Mom's Psyche Deli." She won the prize for bringing the most family members to the reception! Her husband Marty, four children, and mother-in-law, Sandy, all made it to Mansfield! Andi and co. live outside Athens, OH, and Sandy lives in Baltimore, MD.
Betsy Cave and her husband John are beside her quilt "Yum Yum Land." Betsy is the REAL local artist, living in Mansfield, and being actively involved with the art center. She is also a member of AQN, Art Quilt Network, along with other artists in this show: Sue Alvarez, Jane Burch Cochran, Anita Corum, Michele Merges Martens, Elizabeth Cherry Owen, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart, Judy Vierow, and Jimmy and me. Patricia Ciricillo and Anne Warren were members of AQN for several years each.
Susan McMillen, of Shreve, OH, stands with her quilt, "Sara Laweasel's Dogwood." Susan is a local artist friend of ours, and is a member of WAGE, our artists' group, Wayne Artists' Group Effort. She has been making art quilts for about five years now.
Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart and her husband Ken pose with Mary's quilt "My Pie Guy." It is really an installation of various parts, including a quilted shirt of Ken's. Mary Helen and Ken came up from Newark, OH for the reception.
Marykay Yannotti poses with her quilt "Twelve Months of Bitchin' Was Heard in Mom's Kitchen, OR Every Co-Dependent I Know Has a Really Big But." MaryKay came to the reception from New Jersey, though she is fast to tell you that she's from Philadelphia. Her quilt's diary is covered in pink fake fur, purchased on one of those notorious Turtle Art Camp midnight hauls at Wal-Mart.
